Information for Veterinarians
- Interpret test results if testing is being done. Each herd has the opportunity to voluntarily test once during the four-year program. You need to 'sell' it, if you want to see it! Testing can be completed through regular DHI testing, or through blood testing. Veterinarians will need to submit the blood samples to the Animal Health Laboratory at the University of Guelph.
- FOR CLIENTS WHO WISH TO USE THE BLOOD TEST
DHI Herds and Non-DHI Herds will be contacting their veterinarian for sampling options and related fees. Along with their samples, please submit the following to the Animal Health Lab:
- Conduct the RAMP with the client within 90 days of testing.
- Bill producers directly as you would for routine herd-health consultations. It is typical for an initial RAMP to take one hour, but this will depend on the issues encountered. Subsequent annual reviews may take less time. You will receive copies of the RAMP document by mail in the coming months. In addition, a user guide will be distributed to all veterinarians.
- Make written recommendations for changes on the farm via the RAMP document.
- Fax the completed RAMP to the Johne's Project Co-ordinator at (519) 846-8178
- Sign Animal Disposal Certificates for cows with titres 1.0 or higher once they are disposed of, if done on-farm by the producer through burial or composting. (Renderer's will verify the removal of cows they pick up)
- Please complete the Herd Health and Veterinary Medicine Use Policy Annual Declaration for Ontario Dairy Producers with each of your clients. It is recommended to leave this document on farm and have a copy for your files.
